Real hair extensions need special care
Unlike your natural hair, extensions don’t receive oils from your scalp, which means they’re more vulnerable to drying out and reacting to environmental factors. Once fitted, it’s up to you to maintain them properly because the final results rely just as much on your aftercare as our application.
Chemical reactions from sunscreen and fake tan
You might not realise it, but your everyday beauty products can have a dramatic effect on your extensions, particularly when it comes to sunscreen and fake tan. Many sunscreens contain ingredients like avobenzone or oxybenzone, which are oil-soluble UV filters. When they come into contact with extensions – especially light blonde tones – they can trigger a chemical reaction, causing the hair to take on a peach, pink, or orange tones.
Fake tan products can cause similar issues. DHA, the active ingredient in most tanners, can oxidise and transfer to hair strands, leading to warm, brassy tones.
How to avoid it:
- Wash your hands thoroughly after applying fake tan before touching your hair
- When using sunscreen, avoid direct contact with your hairline and extensions, or opt for mineral-based sunscreens that are less reactive
- Tie your hair up or cover it with a hat when applying products to your skin
- If you’re heading on holiday or using tanning products regularly, ask your stylist about the best toning shampoos or UV sprays to protect your extensions
Sunlight and UV Rays
Just like your skin, your hair extensions can be affected by UV exposure. Prolonged time in the sun without protection can lead to:
- Fading or discolouration
- Dryness and brittleness
- A shift in tone (especially with lighter shades)
Why this happens:
UV rays break down the natural pigments in hair (even real human hair!), which can change the colour and create a brassy, orange tone. Add heat, chlorine, and saltwater into the mix, and you’ve got the perfect storm for damaged, faded extensions.
How to avoid it:
- Use UV-protectant sprays specifically formulated for hair
- Cover your hair when you’re outdoors for extended periods
- Rinse your hair with clean water before and after swimming to minimise absorption of chlorine or salt.
- Blonde extensions are especially vulnerable. A cool-toning shampoo (ask one of our stylists to recommend one for you) can help balance any unwanted warmth that appears.
Heat Styling and Thermal Damage

- A toning gloss or mask to neutralise brassiness

- Use sulphate-free, moisturising shampoo and conditioner
- Avoid sleeping with wet hair
- Tie hair in a loose braid before bed
